A&E's show online has short biographies of over 15,000 famous folks.
Nobel Foundation's Web contains lists of the 1996 laureates and a searchable database of past laureates. The site also includes general information about Alfred Nobel and a history of the prize.
Notable Citizens of Planet Earth lets you search by occupation as well as by name. (Hint: there are some librarians here. Pretty cool, huh?)
Who is in charge here? For heads of state and people like that, look at the Rulers Page. (You may have to try several times before the link is successful.) There is also a bit of information about the United Nations, the Organization of American States, etc.
